We are definitely in that time of year of giving and receiving and I’d like to share with you some interesting information on GIVING. I read a great article recently on why people should give and I’m so excited to sum it up for you. There are 5 main reasons for giving…

  1. Giving makes you feel good.
  2. Giving strengthens your personal values.
  3. Giving is more impactful than ever.
  4. Giving shows to others the importance of generosity.
  5. Giving encourages friends and family to do the same.

I’m not saying that I don’t like to receive a gift now and then and especially on my birthday or at Christmas but I am saying that if you give you will get more than just a gift. Research has shown that if your are feeling down in the dumps that doing something for someone else will lift your spirits. You’ve heard stories of pulling up to the drive-in window of a fast food restaurant and someone has paid for your meal. It feels great! Well let me tell you that being the person who pays for that person is an incredible feeling just to see the look on their face. Try it sometime! I know you’ve heard of the Santa Claus that gives money out to random strangers. Why do you think they show that on the news? Yep, it’s because it makes us feel so good to watch it.

And then there is another important yet controversial topic of who gives more. Psychology Today says that those with less give more than the wealthy. “Why do those who have less give more? Part of the reason lies in the fact that they are more compassionate and more sensitive to the needs of others. Psychologists refer to their way of thinking as a ‘contextualist tendency’ marked by an external focus on what is going on in their environment and with other people. On the other hand, those who have more tend to be self centered with ‘solipsistic tendencie’ that are concentrated on their own internal states, goals, motivations, and emotions.” So find some time or money to GIVE this holiday season and not to just receive. Our own camp has a foundation you can give to any time of year. Most of our counselors and campers give each summer to help make a memorable camp experience possible for every girl. Please head to The Skyline Foundation website if you are interested in giving today. Above all, thank God that you are able to give and to receive.
