I cannot believe it is already the largest club competition: Speed Challenge! Second session is flying by here at Skyline! Sunday was so nice getting to rest up after a week chock full of activites and nighttime special programs. Last night, there were 42 counselors found in counselor hunt. The girls did so well and left no stone unturned around camp. With more than half our staff found, the remaining few are excited to hang in the same spot next session. Our stay-over campers were already strategizing for third session hunting!
Today was an awesome day all around camp. Our counselors and girls are making the most of their activities with only two days left to acheive those goals, learn their showtime routines for dance, cheerleading, and gymnastics, be ‘off book’ to perform Annie Jr. in Musical theatre, finalize their marksman qualifactions in rifelry, and more. During club meeting, they also got their theme and guidelines to prepare for cheer off tomorrow night! I can’t believe our last club competition is a day away! Check out what we were up to around camp today:
Today in ropes course, the girls were able to do the Zipline, the Nerds Rope, and the Vswing. In most of our classes (based on size) the girls are able to do all three items. We have seen so much bravery and conquering of fears - by this point they are all pros and have their goals!
Today in fun swim, the girls had the choice to play on the lilly pad or swim in the pool. We have great floaty options in the pool and it has been extremely hot here in Mentone these last few days (and the days to come) so swimming has been refreshing and really popular with the girls! It is also really fun to see their creativity on the jumping board or with pool games. The lily pad is in the river and is a fun way to work on balance and teamwork! The girls have fun chatting and playing on the lily pads - some even treating them like a runway to show off their fashionable and fun lifejackets!
In LT class today, the LTs worked with Katie on the strechy blue exercise (see pictures!) - learning you must go all in with one hundred percent of your efforts to make things work how they’re intended. It also shows them they must trust others to do the same when working in group or team settings.
The Caving, Survival, and Rappelling class took a caving trip to Howard’s Waterfall Cave. It is a local spot close to here in Trenton, Georgia. From Mentone it’s a 31 minute drive straight up I-59. The girls get to ride altogether on our activity bus so they get some bonding time and a little trip away from camp. They take food and all their gear with them and they will return later this evening!
Today in arts and crafts, the girls were given air dry clay and wood options for sculpture construction. They are putting together a lot of creative shapes to build and dry overnight before painting tomorrow!
In pottery - today is painting day!! This means the girls are painting projects they’ve made this session, selecting their final visions and colors for their pieces, before the pieces are fired in the kiln to come home with them. Pottery is extremely popular here at Skyline and you’ll want to make sure your girl has all her projects to show you when you pick them up!
In home science today, April is teaching the girls about table etiquette. They learn with table setting examples and practice for the upcoming (very popular) tea party in the dining hall!
Today in archery, the girls got to practice free shooting, and then did their tournament qualifier shooting. Our archery head will announce who made the tournament soon! The tournament is for club points and held on the last day of activities. It is a huge feat to be selected for the tournament after working on their technique, aim, and grouping all session so stay tuned for our tournament representatives from each club! Riflery also does the same!
In fitness, the girls were treated to a yoga class lead by a local instructor that lives here in Mentone. She is a staple around town owning a local flower farm and teaching yoga year-round! The girls really enjoyed the opportunity to stretch their muscles and get some good and calming exercise time!
Sausage, biscuits, eggs, grits, honeydew, cereal, milk, yogurt, and orange juice!
Hamburger steak, rolls, carrots, peas, salad bar, fruit, peanut butter & jellies!
For dinner, the girls enjoyed personal pizzas with corn and pineapple on the side and the salad bar options!
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies…” Psalm 23:5a.
Today, our counselors lead the girls in a discussion of how God prepares us for anything (good or bad) ahead. Just like we prepare our homes and hearts in advance of guest arrivals. We also discussed how He sent His son to experience all the good and bad in this world for us, so He understands us in all our humanity.
The girls have the opportiunity to memorize our theme verses for a rubber bracelet during the session. You’ll see a lot of red arm bands as we have had so many girls learn and recite the verse for our admin!
Our christian emphasis here at camp is a huge part of camp life for our girls attending Skyline and our staff we hire for the summer. Our daily devos are counselor-lead and our counselors work really hard to plan these at orientation prior to camp so they are thought-out, prepared, and aligned with our summer theme: Psalm 23.
Tonight, the girls competed by club, and divided by age group, in multiple relays! The overall goal is the most wins combined for their club’s placement first, second, or third place. Some of the relays included:
-Shoe Mix: the girls take off one shoe and leave it in the middle of the circle. We mix up the pile so they race (one at a time) to find and put back on their own shoe. Then they run back for the next girl to do the same.
-Ball Sweep: The girls have a broom and must sweep a dodgeball to the center and back to their teammate.
-Hula Line: Girls stand in line with their arms linked, and move the hula hoop along the line without using their hands!
-Over Under: The girls are in a line and pass a dodgeball over their head and then under legs (in rotation) to the end of the circle
-Leg Race: After over under, the girls must crawl through the line under the team’s legs.
There are a few more as well! These occur all at once, but one age group at a time. Tonight, the results were:
Troopers
Mounties
Rangers
We had so much fun with second session speed challege and a great day of activities. All the girls are ready for bed after campfire and dreaming of color wars tomorrow!!
