This year, we’re introducing something new to our daily schedule at camp — 6th Period Camper Free Choice. Every single day, girls will spend the last 40 mintues of each activity day by choosing a different class to join. This space will provide girls another opportunity to connect, play and enjoy a different type of camp activity.

Girls get to decide how they want to spend their time. They might:

  • Play with play-dough, sensory stations, or magna tiles.
  • Learn how to sew, crochet, or needlepoint
  • Play flag football, go on a scavenger hunt, or do yoga.
  • Create bookmarks, drawings or camp crafts.
  • Relax with a book under a tree or even listen to someone read them a book.
  • Play board games with friends and maybe even Mahjong!
  • Simply sit and talk

This period is intentionally unstructured (but still supervised), giving girls the space to follow their interests and their energy. There will active classes, more relaxing classes and classes that are very hands-on to offer a wide variety for all girls.

In today’s fast-paced world, girls are growing up with more opportunities than ever before, but also more pressure. They are often balancing academics, activities, social expectations, and constant comparison through social media. In the middle of all that noise, free choice time becomes something powerful.

It Builds Creativity

Without step-by-step instructions, girls invent rules, create worlds, and solve problems in ways we could never script. Free play strengthens flexible thinking and innovation skills that matter.

It Strengthens Voice and Leadership

Free choice gives girls the opportunity to:

  • Decide what they want
  • Express their ideas
  • Lead a game or project
  • Set boundaries with peers

These moments may seem small, but they build lifelong skills. When girls practice making decisions in a supportive environment, they learn that their voice matters.

It Encourages Independence

Girls today often move from one structured activity to the next. Adults plan, direct, and guide much of their day. Free choice shifts that dynamic.

It asks: What do you want to do?

Learning to make decisions, even simple ones, builds independence and self-trust. Girls begin to understand their interests, strengths, and preferences. Girls already gain independence by choosing the 5 daily activities they will take during their two-week session; this free choice time just allows them one extra space where growth, independence, and creativity can happen at camp!

It Supports Emotional Well-Being

Unstructured time lowers stress. It gives girls space to decompress, especially in a world that often asks them to perform, achieve, and compete. Free choice allows girls to tune into what they need: high-energy play or quiet connection. We are excited to have camper free choice each day as the last activity so that girls can decompress and have a sense of fun and adventure, choosing to do a different type of activity each day.
